Neat Fashion Exhibitions in NYC

One of the things I love most about my city is the endless opportunity for exploration. So many things going on, so much to see, not enough time to do it all! Nevertheless, it’s still fun to pick and choose to your heart’s content. On that end, I’ve noticed there are some cool ongoing and upcoming fashion-related exhibitions on show around the Big Apple.

Sorry in advance for the lack of images in this post. I was about to include ones from each museum’s page, but then worried I’d be doing so without permission. Wouldn’t want the museum police after me!

Anyway, here’s what I’ve found (click on the exhibition name to learn more about each):

Killer Heels: The Art of the High-Heeled Shoe
Where: The Brooklyn Museum
When: September 10, 2014 – February 15, 2015

It’s been a while since I’ve made it out to the Brooklyn Museum, but it’s a great place and the Brooklyn Botanical Garden is right next door to boot. While I couldn’t imagine myself walking around town in most of these heels (I’m no Carrie Bradshaw!), it’s amazing to see the varying designs over the past several centuries.

Death Becomes Her: A Century of Mourning Attire
Where: The Met
When: October 21, 2014 – February 1, 2015

I have to admit, I love exhibitions that explore cultural history and dress more than ones featuring high-style designers/fashion. Seeing how the everyday person (well, and the likes of Queen Victoria!) used dress to express themselves and cultural traditions over the centuries fascinates me.

Kimono: A Modern History
Where: The Met
When: September 27, 2014 – January 4, 2015

According to the website, over 50 “spectacular” kimonos from the 18th century to today will be on display, and will include those worn by the wealthy to the everyday person. Think I should wear my 1920s kimono robe for kicks? ;)

Exposed: A History of Lingerie
Where: FIT
When: June 3 – November 15, 2014

Running out of time to see this one, but will possibly be seeing it this Saturday during a meet-up with some visiting Chicago sewing bloggers. Join us for fabric shopping and good times!

Dance & Fashion
Where: FIT
When: September 13, 2014 – January 3, 2015

While I don’t need special costuming to pull off my signature lawn-mower and sprinkler moves at parties, this exhibition on dance and fashion looks fun. Plus, the description includes a mention of Martha Graham, which reminds me of a hilarious scene (one of many) in The Birdcage. Aw, Robin…

Faking It: Originals, Copies, and Counterfeits
Where: FIT
When: December 2, 2014 – April 25, 2015

This one’s not out for a while, but I feel like the topic of copying clothes comes up often in the sewing community so this might be a cool one to check out. April 25th seems like a world away, but will be here before we know it!

Any of these intrigue you? Maybe if there’s enough of an interest we can get a group going for some of these. Until then, over and out!

  1. Thanks for posting this! I’d not been checking for awhile. Want to make a date sometime in November and hit most of these up? Kimonos/Mourning attire really sounds like it will be good. I haven’t done a Met visit since last year! Also, see you saturday, can’t wait to catch up :D

    • Yes, let’s do that! Perhaps we can figure out a date on Saturday and see if others would be interested. Glad to hear you’ll be there!

Hey, thanks for commenting! I truly appreciate it and always try to respond back. :)
